About

CSSI is an online, four-week introduction to computer science (CS) for rising first year college students with a passion for technology — especially students who identify with groups that have been historically marginalized in the field. CSSI seeks to inspire the tech leaders and innovators of tomorrow and build self confidence, agency, and efficacy. Students will learn computer science fundamentals, participate in workshops to promote self-care, identity, career, and skill development, and build community with peers and industry professionals.

Program goals:

  • Connect historically excluded students with the skills, confidence, and agency to thrive in the tech industry.
  • Facilitate authentic learning experiences that support the development of STEM identities.
  • Empower students to persist through the first year of a rigorous CS program.
  • Expand access to computer science in communities and encourage networking, friendships, etc. within those communities.
  • Provide exposure and insight into Google’s community, culture, and opportunities.

Program includes:

  • A project-based curriculum designed to prepare students for their first year of college pursuing CS or a related major.
  • Developmental workshops each week to promote self-care, identity, career, and skill development.
  • Build community through daily interaction with peers, Google engineers, and industry professionals
  • Exposure and insight into Google’s internship programs and technical career opportunities.

Fisk and Google graduate 40 from Computer Science Summer Institute

Minorities, particularly African-Americans, have traditionally been underrepresented in STEM career fields,” said Victor Scotti, Student Development Specialist for Google. “A key component of Google’s CSSI-HBCU program is to give young men and women an opportunity to fully explore computer science with the ultimate goal of pursuing careers in technology.” The program is one of Google’s longest-running development programs for underrepresented minorities headed into technology careers, the release says. The program prepares students by exposing them to computer science. It is meant to build their confidence before they enter college.

5 things I learned from spending a summer at Google

My time at Google’s CSSI was definitely intense, frustrating, and at times, painful. However, it was worth it...I was very fortunate to learn how to program first-hand from some of the best engineers (aka Googlers) in the world. The Googler that taught us Javascript was also on the international board of the language. (meaning, they decided if any changes were to be made, new add-ons, etc.) My friend Billy ran into Vint Cerf, the founder of the internet, while he was on his way to lunch. Two googlers, one who gave all of us the ability to “Skip” ads on Youtube, and another who was part of the team that created Google Chrome, both taught us how code as well.
