Water is critical for human life. You interact and ingest water every single day and don’t think twice. How do you know, however, that the water you are drinking is clean when pollution is leading to a variety of problems associated with global human health? Ensuring you and future generations have access to safe water is the job of environmental scientists working in the specialized field of water quality. In this course, you will have the opportunity to work as an environmental field scientist, analyzing the health of the water in Middle Tennessee! In your research, you will consider questions, such as ‘How do scientists measure/quantify the level of contamination in a water source?’ and ‘How do we treat contaminated water?’, as well as ‘What are the impacts on human health?’ You will collect data from field surveys and experiments, use descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze your results, and present your findings to your peers like a research scientist. In your final project, you will write and present to your class a mock white paper to the TN Department of Environment and Conservation detailing your research findings and offering recommendations for potential new laws and regulations. Expect to leave this course knowing how to code in R (the standard in statistical programming languages) and how to describe and analyze data sets from the environmental sciences. Expect also to leave with a newfound appreciation for the work of field research and for the processes that govern and shape the natural waters around us.

Greg Smith is the instructor of Interdisciplinary Science and Research at John Overton High School in Nashville, TN. He earned his Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Vanderbilt University in 2019, where he relied on concepts and techniques from geology, ecology, and chemistry to understand the dietary habits of extinct megafauna (large mammals like elephants, camels, and bison). Now, he leverages his diverse scientific background and passion for education to teach high school students how to be scientists! His students carry out independent research projects, give presentations at national science competitions, and get their hands dirty working with multiple business partners outdoors in the beautiful area surrounding Middle Tennessee. In his free time, Greg enjoys hiking, rock climbing, and yoga with his wife, Lauren, and his two children, Harvey and Gwendolyn. Greg loves teaching and hopes to inspire future generations of scientists to follow their dreams!

In order to determine if VSA’s accelerated courses are a good fit, all students are required to submit qualifying documentation as part of their application. There are two eligibility documentation options. Below is a description of each option.
- Option 1: Submission of Test Scores
Students applying to Vanderbilt Summer Academy who select this option should submit qualifying documentation at the time of application. Please note that test scores in the 90th percentile and above for age group in one or more sections on an advanced achievement assessment (ACT, SAT, PSAT) OR any other nationally normed standardized assessment (such as state testing, MAP/NWEA testing, ITBS, or ERB) if advanced achievement assessment scores are not available suggests that VSA would be a good fit academically for a student. We also accept cognitive measures (i.e., WISC-V, CogAT, Otis Lennon, Stanford-Binet) and out-of-level test scores (i.e., ACT in 7th grade). Individual ability and/or achievement assessments from psychologists are also accepted. All pages of the individual evaluation and assessment need to be included. Test scores should be less than three years old.
When reviewing scores, we look specifically at strengths and accelerated achievement in the content area(s) for selected course(s) of interest. For example, if a student is applying to a humanities course, the VSA team is looking at reading/writing/ELA test scores. PTY does not have cutoffs for standardized test scores in order to apply to the program. Also, please note that scores above the 90th percentile do not automatically guarantee admission into the program based on VSA’s randomized admissions process.
- Option 2: Portfolio
At this time, due to the impact that COVID has had on testing availability and requirements, VSA is allowing for an option that does not require test score submission to determine program eligibility.
Please note, although selecting the portfolio option does not hurt a student’s chances of admission, VSA strongly encourages students to submit test scores (option 1).
Required Portfolio Components (3 Components):
     - Transcript: Grades of As and Bs in the most academically advanced courses offered at the student’s school typically suggest that the VSA program would be a good academic fit. Through the transcript review process, we are looking for students who are highly motivated. PTY also understands that extenuating circumstances might impact a student’s grades. Please make sure to provide annotation if the student’s grades do not accurately demonstrate their ability and motivation to participate in an accelerated academic environment.
Transcripts can be submitted as a picture or screenshot of a student’s unofficial record but must include the student’s name and show grades for the 2021-2022 school year and the fall 2022 school year.
     - Two Educator Recommendations: Students should request recommendations from two educators (teachers, administrators, or counselors) by sharing the link below. When your recommenders complete the form, the completed form will be emailed to PTY. Please do not request that your recommenders write a letter or submit a recommendation in any method other than the following form. The form takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

     - Resume: Submit a one-page resume as part of your application, so the VSA admissions team has a better understanding of your interests and extracurricular activities. Knowing more about you helps VSA staff determine if this program is a good fit. The resume should include extracurricular activities, work/volunteer experience, awards, and honors, etc.

Columbia's Summer High School Academic Program for Engineers (SHAPE) is a selective pre-college program for rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates. SHAPE is geared toward students with an aptitude for STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

SHAPE consists of two, three-week summer sessions. Students may attend one or both sessions. Each 3-week session offers college-level, project-based courses in engineering taught by prestigious faculty at Columbia University. Students engage with peers and Columbia University faculty, staff, students, alumni, and industry partners through interactive programming, site visits, and workshops.

Students will choose a subject and participate in one introductory college-level engineering course for the duration of their session. The program also features electives, college preparation, support from Columbia students, and other workshops. Please note that SHAPE is a pre-college program taught by faculty, but it does not provide college credit. Students will also visit the MakerSpace. The MakerSpace is equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC tools for digital fabrication. Students are required to complete a safety training before using the space and will only do so under close supervision. Some classes will use the Makerspace on a regular basis to build prototypes.

The focus of this is course is learning how to work with glass in the kiln, including fusing, slumping and casting.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University credit transcript.

Course Objectives
In this course, students will:
- Learn how to cut glass and work with large color palette. 
- Learn how to heat and cool glass in a kiln.

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) places high school students in Department of Navy (DoN) laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for eight weeks during the summer.

SEAP gives academically talented sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in STEM the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers.

SEAP is a competitive program with around 300 placements in more than 30 laboratories around the country in which many participants go on to careers within the DoN. Interns are selected based upon academic achievement, personal statements, recommendations, and career and research interests.

CWS is the National Hispanic Institute (NHI) capstone experience for high school juniors preparing for their senior year. Created 30 years ago, it aims to provide future leaders with as much insight and practice as possible to prepare for the transition to adulthood, with an emphasis on both college readiness and leadership development.

Getting coached for success in the college admissions process is only one part of making decisions about your future; making a final institutional selection based on your life goals and values requires a different lens. The CWS addresses the emotional and psychological factors that impact life plans by providing a process for decision-making called Inquiry-Based Learning. Using this process,  students team up to take on complex challenges and use inquiry-based processes to offer strategic plans for their future goals. CWS graduates are considered high-potential candidates for future faculty roles with NHI, as they are students of the inquiry process used by NHI leaders to evolve new program experiences, ideas, and concepts in community social entrepreneurship.

Students enroll in 2 college-level seminars per 2-week session, designed specifically for high school students. These seminars are small (15-20 student), discussion based, interactive sessions in subject areas from across the University. Seminars will be offered in a broad range of topics - from neuroscience to criminal justice reform - and are taught by Tufts faculty and graduate students doing real, cutting edge research in those areas of study. Monday through Thursday, students will participate in 2 hour morning and afternoon seminars. The Berklee Bass Department and Victor Wooten are offering an opportunity to broaden musical knowledge and skills. Every participant's schedule will include a class in each of the following:
- Master classes: Attend small-group, lesson-format master classes led by faculty focusing on different practice,  technique, and performance methods.

- Ensembles: Expand your rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic skills in small ensembles each day.

- Jam sessions: Play with other students and faculty members in various styles through this informal performance opportunity.

Good writing skills are essential for college and any professional career. The two-week residential Writer’s Lab provides a deep and vibrant immersion for high school students seeking to focus on sharpening and polishing their ability to articulate clearly and effectively.

The Program
This two-week workshop affords intensive writing opportunities for high school students who are interested in rich and engaging experiences. The primary goal of this course is to provide students with a chance to explore different modes of writing such as analytical, narrative, and creative. Through self-exploration and examinations of texts, students dive into the writing process and use discussion and reflection to shape their writing. Our faculty will work closely with students and provide hands-on instruction. Students will conference with peers and teachers as a means to polish their portfolios.

Formal and informal discussions are a staple of the course; students are charged with critically analyzing the text and incorporating newfound understandings into their own writing. Students will practice making arguments and supporting their ideas with textual evidence while they also review and practice various grammar rules, including composing clear and complete sentences, using appropriate punctuation, and coordinating subject, antecedent, and verb agreement.

Students leave this course with a more nuanced understanding of both analytical and creative writing techniques, rhetorical devices, and correct grammar as well as greater confidence in reading, thinking, and speaking critically about literature. At the conclusion of the session, students will create a final portfolio of their work, and parents will receive a report on the student's progress.

We all live and work under this thing called “capitalism,” but what is it? How does it determine nearly all aspects of our daily lives? How has capitalism changed over time? What came before capitalism and what might come after? Why are so many poor while so few are extremely rich? Why are jobs getting worse? How come debt is rising? Where do the everyday objects of consumption come from? Why do some geographical places/regions have more wealth than others? What caused the financial crisis of 2008 and how has the COVID pandemic shifted the economic landscape? What should be the role of the state in regulating a capitalist economy? How does capitalism produce racism, sexism, and xenophobia?

These are the sorts of questions we will explore in this class. We will examine the geographies of finance (including the 2008 financial meltdown), industrial production (including the industrialization of China), and consumer culture. We will pay particular attention to the consequences of these integrated capitalist geographies for people and societies in a variety of contexts. The goal of this class is to begin to think critically about the processes underlying global capitalism. You will learn key concepts used to understand capitalism as not only an economic system, but also a political, cultural, and geographical system. You will not only be asked to demonstrate that you understand these concepts, but also, that you are developing your own unique perspective for explaining how capitalism works.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University credit transcript.

- Comprehend the economic dimensions of their lives
- Explain how and why capitalism functions as it does
- Understand the economic causes of inequality and social oppression
- Situate capitalism historically and geographically
- Appreciate how capitalism affects ideas and culture
- Know how capitalism started and consider how it will end

Students must be of rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior status – or a 2023 high school graduate. 

Eligibility Requirements
- Age Requirement: All students must be ages 15 or over by their move in date. For example, if their course begins on July 2, they must turn 15 before July 2.
- Grade Level:
     - For our noncredit courses: Students must be of rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior status or a 2023 high school graduate* for noncredit courses.
     - For our credit courses: For credit-bearing courses, students must be of rising junior or senior status or a 2023 high school graduate*.
     *Graduating seniors are only able to apply if they are not attending Syracuse University in the fall as a matriculated student.
- GPA: Students applying to Syracuse University Summer College – On Campus are expected to be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

Language Proficiency
If English is not your first language, we do not require the TOEFL as part of your application; however, students who participate in our Pre-College programs must have full proficiency in English – listening, speaking, writing and reading – in order to be successful in our programs.  To get a better idea, if you decide to apply to Stevens for Undergraduate study, you are required to demonstrate English proficiency with one of the following:

TOEFL (minimum 80 iBT)
IELTS (minimum 6 overall)
SAT I Critical Reading (minimum 550)

Visa
Stevens Institute of Technology does not issue Form I-20 for the purpose of attaining F-1 visa status to summer program participants.  Students wishing to participate in the summer program may either attain a B-2 tourist visa to participate in a short course of study which is recreational, and less than 18 hours per week, or be a citizen or national of a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).  Please note that under the Visa Waiver Program, you must first have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval before you travel.  Citizens of Canada and Bermuda generally do not need tourist visas to enter the U.S.  To help facilitate the B-2 visa application process, you may contact the Office of Pre-College Programs at summer@stevens.edu to request a program information letter to accompany your application for a B-2 visa.   

Travel
Students are responsible for covering their own travel costs.  However, for students traveling by air to Newark Liberty International Airport, a staff member from Stevens Institute will be waiting at the airport to greet you and provide transportation to Stevens at no additional cost to you!

This one week program is for those who are interested in engineering but also think the medical field may be for you? Why not combine them and pursue a career in biomedical engineering? Over the course of the week students will have the opportunity to learn about career options available within the field of biomedical engineering, speak with industry professionals, use carious medical devices and learn how to analyze physiology data during labs, and learn about applying engineering principles to better healthcare and society.

The Emergence of Modern Europe: Renaissance to the Present

What is Europe? This course explores the emergence of Europe as an idea and place. It draws on literature and art from Machiavelli to Russian ballet to explain Europe's changing meaning; and focuses on nation- and state-building to explain Europe's shifting boundaries

Current Bu Students 
Summer Term is comprised of two, six-week summer sessions. Students can take up to two courses (8–10 credits) during each summer session. Students wanting to take an overload of more than two courses in a session need permission from their BU school or college. The overload course cannot be added on the Student Link, but must be added using a Summer Add/Drop form.

Boston University High School Summer Program

A gateway experience exploring the nature of design creativity and multi-disciplinary problem solving.

Specialist design degrees have increasingly given way to interdisciplinary design studies that focus on the development of a broad body of knowledge including visual mastery, social and cultural knowledge, digital awareness, and business knowledge.

The course will begin with an introduction to recent design history, progress to an understanding of industry specific terminology and techniques. As we progress students will explore the development of consumer objects and digital prototypes. In addition to lectures, students will have time to create simple 3D printed objects, sketch logos and brands, and prototype software-based products. The course will also discuss the value of portfolios as an indicator of skills for both admission to higher education as well as discussion or how are used to hire professionals.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University credit transcript.

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, students will:
- Understand the role of design as it is linked to social development, technology, and commerce.
- Recognize key factors impacting current and future design practice.
- Develop a theoretical knowledge of the roles designers are filling in order to have a greater impact on society.

The program provides summer (six weeks, Monday to Friday) research opportunities to Maine high school juniors in host institutions across the state. Students who are interested in STEM fields and would like to experience “real-time” applications of STEM in a research-focused work world, conducting research and technology development, should apply. Available for Maine High School juniors who are interested in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). A paid internship through the MERITS program. Students experience ‘real-time’ applications of STEM at various Maine host institutionsconducting hands-on research and technology
development. 

Students must be U.S citizens, residents of Maine and must be enrolled at a Maine school tor homeschooled and a resident of Maine.

- School Information & Transcripts— In this section, we ask you for information about your school and performance. Your grades and transcripts are the least important part of the application
- Activities— Here, we want you to give us a sense for your passions, interests, and your ability to create real impact. We want to see that you are motivated and action-oriented in pursuing the things that matter to you.
- Video— Ensure you address the prompt and stay within the time limit. Get started on the video early!
- Portfolio— This is an optional section for applicants who may have created individual projects outside of traditional activities, or to share photos of some of the innovations that you may not have otherwise been able to share. They are typically longer-term individual projects in the fields of coding, making, or design.

The campus program bring students from around the US and world to the campus of top universities that allow us to offer resources and culture to support our young entrepreneurs. Students live in the dorms and go to sessions in university classrooms, embracing the innovative culture and surroundings as they start real companies for four weeks on campus.

Your startup: You develop a real startup!
Course materials: You follow the LaunchX methodology that includes daily interactive classroom sessions, sprinkled with simulations, activities, and speakers.
Mentorship: You are supported throughout by peer discussion groups, a team of mentors, and your instructors and interns.

Students in current grades 9-12 (freshman through senior, or international equivalent) may apply. This means that you must be in grades 9-12 when you submit your application. This equates to going into grade 10-12 or graduating during the summer of the program. Exceptions will NOT be made for advanced middle school students taking high school level classes, nor for graduated students in a gap year. There are no age requirements outside of the grade requirement.
