Learn how to tell stories about you and your world using a variety of journalism skills. Students will apply the foundations of journalism to content creations across platforms. Projects include social media storytelling, zine creation, podcast production, breaking news coverage, and interviews. No journalism experience required, but curiosity is a must.

Tell stories about you and your world through journalism! Explore journalism ethics, practice fundamental skills and create content across platforms. Consider the ways audiences understand and interpret information. Compare storytelling styles on podcasts, social media, magazines, and more. Experiment with different types of coverage, including news, sports and lifestyle. Hear from Newhouse alumni working in the field. Activities include social media storytelling, zine creation, event coverage, interviewing and multimedia production. No journalism experience required, but curiosity is a must.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University noncredit transcript.

Course Objectives

• Identify the role journalism and journalists play in our communities
• Practice fundamental journalism skills of interviewing and writing
• Discuss journalism standards of ethics and diversity
• Produce different types of journalism for different media platforms

Students must be of rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior status – or a 2023 high school graduate.

Eligibility Requirements

• Age Requirement: All students must be ages 15 or over by their move in date. For example, if their course begins on July 2, they must turn 15 before July 2.
• Grade Level:
  • For our noncredit courses: Students must be of rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior status or a 2023 high school graduate* for noncredit courses.
  • For our credit courses: For credit-bearing courses, students must be of rising junior or senior status or a 2023 high school graduate*.
    *Graduating seniors are only able to apply if they are not attending Syracuse University in the fall as a matriculated student.
• GPA: Students applying to Syracuse University Summer College – On Campus are expected to be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
