Mary Claire Schleck, a senior at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung, attended West Point's Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) — a highly selective program for students interested in attending the U.S. Military Academy from Saturday, June 4, to Friday, June 10. “I am so grateful for this immersive experience of life at West Point and in the military,” she said. “Each day, filled with early wakeups, physical training, military training, academic classes, and squad activities, flew by. While there were challenging moments, I loved everything about SLE. I will forever cherish the friendships I made, the knowledge I gained, and the leadership skills I developed during my week at West Point.”
Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) is highly competitive since there are normally 6,000 applicants and capacity for just 1,000 attendees. SLE gives high school juniors a week to experience life as a cadet to inform their college selection decision. SLE is a fast-paced program of academic classes, military training, physical fitness training, and intramural athletics conducted during the first half of June each year.
Elizabeth Roper, Director of College Counseling, announced that Mary Claire Scheck '23 and Renee Vozza '23 have been accepted to the Summer Academies of two military institutions...“These are quite selective programs” stated Ms. Roper....“I am most looking forward to learning more about the cadet lifestyle at West Point and what it is like to serve in the military. It’s an honor to be chosen for this program,” said Mary Claire. “I have always been interested in the military and I feel like a calling to serve others around me and my country. So, I really wanted to attend the Summer Leadership Experience at West Point.”
For high school students who are considering attending West Point, summer seminar is the perfect way to get a feel for what life is like at the Academy. We highly recommend summer seminar for students who have little to no military exposure so that they can get a better understanding of what they are signing up for. In addition to attending classes and getting a taste of military life, students will also have the chance to meet with Army officers and learn more about the admissions process. Students get to hear directly from cadets about what life is like, as well as receive counseling from the West Point admissions team. If you’re thinking about seeking an appointment to West Point, Summer Leaders Experience is a great way to get started.
