Land in Tokyo for orientation, where you will begin Japanese classes and practice writing systems like hiragana and kanji. Your language skills will develop through 60+ hours of direct exposure in formal classes, with host family interactions, peer-to-peer practice, and more. Because English is not widely spoken in Japan, you will have countless opportunities for immersion. You’ll also enjoy sushi and indulge in handmade noodles at the city’s famed ramen shops. You will learn what Tokyo’s exciting and unique districts have to offer, including anime and manga in Akihabara and the colorful fashion scene in Harajuku.

PZMC is a residential math camp for about 25 mathematically gifted high school students who have completed or are currently enrolled in Algebra 2 or its equivalent. Students will be exposed to several different areas of mathematics through colloquia and other activities, but the primary focus of the camp will be Number Theory & The Art of Mathematical Thinking. Students will learn to explore the theory of numbers by asking thoughtful questions, working out examples, looking for patterns, making conjectures, and finally, proving their results. Students will learn through interactive lectures, group problem solving sessions, and final projects/presentations.

A typical day at math camp includes the following: group problem solving sessions, interactive lectures with ample time for student-driven mathematical discovery, a math talk by an award-winning mathematician or a panel discussion on what it’s like to major in mathematics at college, and plenty of time for fun including hiking, museum trips, and a math movie night!

The Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is an immersion experience for rising junior and senior high school students seeking to learn about (1) the field of veterinary medicine, (2) the steps involved in successfully completing a pre-veterinary undergraduate program and becoming a competitive candidate for applying to veterinary school, and (3) the time and financial commitments involved in choosing this career path.

This two-week class includes an overview of the veterinary profession and the academic preparation and animal experience required for becoming a competitive applicant to veterinary school. Students will complete hands-on rotations in basic comparative anatomy and physiology, animal handling and restraint, and overviews of veterinary pharmacology, clinical pathology, parasitology, biosecurity, diagnostic imaging, obstetrics, and wound management.

The schedule for the program consists of short lectures and discussions on the UMass-Amherst main campus in addition to hands-on modules at the University’s Hadley and South Deerfield Farms. During hands-on modules, students will interact with sheep, goats, beef cattle, and horses. There will also be off-campus field trips, academic games, and team presentations.

Working together with their Hofstra counterparts, Hempstead students will receive instruction in news gathering, writing, storytelling, presentation, and publishing in order to produce news and feature stories about their school and the surrounding community.

Hempstead students who want to further their reporting skills can apply to attend the Summer High School Journalism Institute, a free, intensive, two-week workshop that will be held at Herbert School’s state-of-the-art facilities. Here, students will receive advanced instruction in print, online and TV news production.

Hempstead students will be exposed to a wide variety of newsgathering technologies not found in most high schools. During NYFA’s teen film camps, each weekday is split between in-class instruction and on-set production. The below subjects are taught both in-class and on set, where students get to apply the lessons they learned in the classroom to a real film set. In our longer film camps (three, four and six-week), these subjects will be treated in greater detail and taken to a higher level than in the shorter camps. Students in longer programs make more films and, therefore, have more opportunities to develop their abilities and employ what they have learned. But regardless of the length of the camp, our students would agree that they learned more in even just one week than some learn in a month through being on set and gaining hands-on experience working on actual productions. At the end of each camp, the students’ directorial work is celebrated in a screening open to crew, faculty, family, and friends. Curriculum Some of the classes and subjects students can expect to cover in the New York Film Academy’s filmmaking camps include the following. As the director is the leader of a film set, students will learn the language and practice of filmmaking so that they can apply this knowledge to their own original films. They will discuss shooting plans for their film projects and screen their work with their instructor throughout the course. Directing is approached as the art of visual storytelling. Students will find that directing the camera concerns more than just where to place the camera. Through hands-on demonstrations, the students will learn how camera movement, visual arrangement, and editing patterns not only depict the action but also express the underlying drama. Each student directs a series of films in crews of four. Students also rotate in these crews among the principal film crew positions. Crews are required to meet each week with the directing instructor to review scripts and shooting plans. Writing It’s the script that is the backbone of any film and in NYFA’s summer film camps for teens, students will become comfortable writing original screenplays. Students learn the process of taking take a story from initial idea, through treatment and step outline, to a finished script for their final film with the help of our exceptional faculty. Story structure, theme, character, tension, and conflict will be explored as they are used in filmmaking. Hands-on digital camera and lighting NYFA’s summer camps for teens feature a no-nonsense approach to cameras, placing students behind a camera from day one. Students will learn to shoot using industry-standard HDSLR cameras. They will learn proper loading, operation, and maintenance of the camera. In the first week students will shoot and screen tests for focus, exposure, lens perspective, film latitude, slow/fast motion, and contrast. Any students needing extra instruction are given review sessions as necessary. Digital editing While the script provides the backbone of a production and cameras capture the action, it is the editing process that gives all that footage actual structure. Students will learn to edit their films with digital editing software. Their instructors will cover both the technical aspects of the editing process, as well as the conventions and theory behind editing choices and styles. Working with actors To direct actors, one must learn how to work with actors and receive instruction and experience in how to get effective performances from actors in their film projects. Students also get the chance to gain some experience as actors, providing them with important insight into what happens on the other side of the camera. Online film director Our Online Film Directing Workshops are a hands-on, filmmaker experience designed to provide teens with the opportunity to explore storytelling through the art of film. This experience consists of three one-week modules. Students may enroll in all three modules or select to complete individual modules (students are not required to complete one module to attend the next).

Learn the essential building blocks of jazz guitar in Jazz Guitar 101. This course covers fundamental concepts, including chord/scale usage, reharmonization, approach notes, arpeggio substitutions, and how to incorporate melodic tension in rhythm, harmony, and melody. By studying the styles of influential jazz guitarists like Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, Mike Stern, and Pat Martino, you'll understand the jazz language and improve your improvisational skills. With video, MP3 tracks, and written notation, this course helps you quickly integrate these techniques into your playing.

By the end of the course, you will:
- Negotiate basic jazz chord changes
- Learn five jazz standard tunes and to be able to comp and play an effective solo over the chord changes
- Play and know how to use stronger harmonic language through the use of Mixolydian, harmonic, and melodic minor scales, the bebop scale, and the pentatonic scale

After a quick overview of the media industry today, one will learn the technical and aesthetic challenges in this highly competitive field. Students will be able to analyze and spot a film score and become a better storyteller through various writing exercises.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- analyze the story in a film based on the common three-act structure
- appreciate the art of filmmaking as a collaborative process of many different departments, music being just one of them
- understand the historical and technical challenges in film and music synchronization
- understand the creative process of writing to picture
- set up your DAW with appropriate tempo and meter maps
- ackle the most common challenges film composers come across, including:
- use electronic synthesis as a creative tool
- navigate the intricacies of the business, including:
- Contracts and deals
- publishing vs. writer’s share
- self-promotion
- career paths
- import video and create an offset start point in your DAW for scoring purposes
- create final audio mixes within a QuickTime movie

Requirements
Completion of Music Theory 101, Music Theory and Composition 1, and Basic Ear Training or Ear Training 1 or equivalent knowledge and experience is required. Students should be comfortable with the features and workings of their DAW (digital audio workstation) of choice, be it Logic, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, or any of the other programs specifically listed. An existing competency in creating music, combined with a thoughtful awareness of drama and human emotion will be critical assets to draw upon from your own background.

Students undertaking the course should have the following prerequisite musical and technical skills:
Ability to read and create music
Ability to compose music and create scores (either from a notation program such as Finale [full version] or Sibelius) or handwritten and scanned
Some experience with MIDI sequencing and digital audio software for producing and finalizing musical mock-ups via sample libraries

Delve into music production techniques with our world-renowned Music Production and Engineering Department faculty and facilities. Customize your entire experience by selecting your classes, which include topics such as modern record production, multitrack recording and mixing techniques, and DJ production skills. The weekend culminates in a keynote address and presentation featuring a noted industry professional.

 Critical Listening: Explore techniques used to analyze popular recordings from a variety of perspectives, both technical and musical.
Business of Music Production: Discuss licensing, publishing, royalties, contracts, and distribution.
Demystifying Mastering: Even for those who have heard of it, mastering is a discipline shrouded in mystery. Every song on the Billboard Top 100 has been mastered, and every record made by a major artist gets mastered. So, what is it?
Making and Selling Your Own Recordings: Learn how mastering can enhance your final product, how to prepare for manufacturing, how to design your package, and about the most successful marketing methods for independently released albums.
Multitrack Mixing Techniques: Explore the aesthetic choices related to the balance, dynamics, arrangement, preparation, and realization of a successful mix.
Multitrack Recording Techniques: Participate in an accelerated workshop covering many aspects of recording, including microphone selection and placement, equalization, and dynamic signal processing.
Project/Home Studio Design and Setup: Learn about basic equipment requirements, budget considerations, affordable acoustic modifications, and the formation of appropriate expectations.
Turntable Techniques: Learn about the historical development of the turntable, from its origins in Jamaican music to its prominence in hip-hop and contemporary music. Develop basic skills using the turntable for performance/live expression and as a production tool.
Vocal Production: It’s all about the vocals; ask any established producer. This session will focus on how to help your vocalist give you the best, truest vocal performance, and how to enhance that performance by “comping” (combining parts of different vocal takes), context-based level-riding, and phrasing adjustment to augment emotion.
Keynote Presentation: The weekend culminates in a presentation by a noted industry professional.
Evening Sessions: Enjoy open recording and mix sessions, demonstrations, and lab time.

The Berklee Bass Department and Victor Wooten are offering an opportunity to broaden musical knowledge and skills. This event will cover a variety of musical styles and aim to enhance overall musicianship, as well as provide new techniques for performance and a deeper understanding of different music genres.

Every participant's schedule will include a class in each of the following:
- Master classes: Attend small-group, lesson-format master classes led by faculty focusing on different practice,  technique, and performance methods. 
- Clinics: Steve Bailey, Victor Wooten, and special guests will present clinics on ear training, theory, and general musicianship.
- Ensembles: Expand your rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic skills in small ensembles each day.
- Faculty concerts: Explore new styles as you take in the performances by our renowned Bass Department faculty. Friday evening's concert will feature all of the Bass faculty, and Saturday evening's concert will feature Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten. 
- Jam sessions: Play with other students and faculty members in various styles through this informal performance opportunity.

CWS is the National Hispanic Institute (NHI) capstone experience for high school juniors preparing for their senior year. Created 30 years ago, it aims to provide future leaders with as much insight and practice as possible to prepare for the transition to adulthood, with an emphasis on both college readiness and leadership development.

Getting coached for success in the college admissions process is only one part of making decisions about your future; making a final institutional selection based on your life goals and values requires a different lens. The CWS addresses the emotional and psychological factors that impact life plans by providing a process for decision-making called Inquiry-Based Learning. Using this process,  students team up to take on complex challenges and use inquiry-based processes to offer strategic plans for their future goals. CWS graduates are considered high-potential candidates for future faculty roles with NHI, as they are students of the inquiry process used by NHI leaders to evolve new program experiences, ideas, and concepts in community social entrepreneurship.

The field of accounting has been identified as one of the fastest-growing professions, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. Yet studies have shown that there has been declining enrollment in accounting and finance among minority students. The goal of the Accounting Career Awareness Program, part of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc., (NABA) is to increase the understanding of accounting career opportunities among high school students in underrepresented minority groups.

SVA’s Pre-College Program is designed for high school students who want to enhance their creative skills, learn more about a particular field of art, develop a portfolio and experience the challenges and triumphs that exist at one of the most dynamic colleges.

- Students will explore the fundamentals of art & design at a level not readily available in high school
- Classes such as Animation, Advertising, Cartooning, Painting, Photography and many more

Animation majors at SVA are skilled artists and storytellers who come to understand the mechanics of movement through a solid foundation in drawing, narrative development and principles of animation. The purpose of this Pre-College program is for students to gain a basic understanding of the 2D animation production process, from learning the foundations of drawing to creating digital animation through the Adobe Animate pipeline. Students will begin with an introduction to both drawing and animation in the first week, moving to study the intersection between animation and storytelling in the second week. The program will conclude with a focus on how to prepare an animation portfolio for college admission. Please note: Pre-College courses may include the use of nude models. Course curriculum and faculty are subject to change.

SVA’s Pre-College Program is designed for high school students who want to enhance their creative skills, learn more about a particular field of art, develop a portfolio and experience the challenges and triumphs that exist at one of the most dynamic colleges.

- Students will explore the fundamentals of art & design at a level not readily available in high school

Five esteemed faculty members teach this extremely intensive course where small finished works are created everyday, then arranged into a cohesive accordion book. The book will have block printed cloth covers and end papers designed by each student and you will learn how to bind them all together.

Illustration Program

SVA’s Pre-College Program is designed for high school students who want to enhance their creative skills, learn more about a particular field of art, develop a portfolio and experience the challenges and triumphs that exist at one of the most dynamic colleges.

- Students will explore the fundamentals of art & design at a level not readily available in high school
- Classes such as Animation, Advertising, Cartooning, Painting, Photography and many more

In the first week, students will be introduced to essential concepts in graphic design. Type, color, form, hierarchy, and concept will be discussed in detail, with students designing projects, both by hand and on the computer, with these concepts in mind. By the end of the first week, students will have multiple projects completed, including posters, hand-drawn typography, and illustrations. Students will also receive instruction in the basics of the Adobe Creative Suite. For the second week, it's all about building a three-dimensional design project. Each student is given the very same object. In previous summers, the objects have been skateboards, chairs, and guitars. Each student is also given a word that represents a concept, movement or idea. The students then transform their objects into a 3D sculptural design piece that represents their word. It's a lot of work, but the results are always fun and really exciting! 

Graphic Design with 3D Workshop Program

Summer Academy is an intense college-level art program. This rigorous experience is modeled after PAFA's own world renowned, undergraduate first-year arts curriculum.
Students will master essential drawing skills in the Foundations of Drawing course. Students build on this foundation by choosing to explore a range of other skills, including sculpture, printmaking, oil painting, illustration and animation. 
Students gain additional artistic and professional development experience with critique sessions (affectionately known as ‘crit’) and behind the scenes tours of PAFA and other Philadelphia art spaces. 

Summer Academy participants have the opportunity to:
- Get expert guidance from leading artists among PAFA's stellar faculty 
- Get a head start on preparing a portfolio for applying to college
- Earn 4.0 college credits
- Participate in an exhibition in PAFA's world-class art museum
- Earn a merit-based scholarship for Summer Academy and become eligible for a Next Step Scholarship to PAFA if they enroll in the BFA program

Students benefit from one-on-one portfolio reviews with the school's admissions staff. Summer Academy alumni who are accepted to PAFA's BFA program are eligible for a $4000 Next Step Scholarship ($1000 per year).
